Hey Javier, Sleep Coach at Live Well Mattress and Furnishing Centres, and today I want to talk to you about Snoring .
Speaker 2: (00:08)
Speaker 1: (00:09)
So the purpose of today’s video is to teach you about snoring as far as the common commonly known facts and a couple of things that you may not know.
Um, a couple of ways that you can actually reduce the amount of snoring that you actually do. So first off, snoring, it is probably 10 times more common than you think it is. In fact, um, I would go so far as to say that every household has at least one snore within the household. Um, I will tell you that snoring is actually caused by a blocked air passage. And what happens is while you’re asleep, as we all know, your muscles relax the muscles in your throat, including your, um, your tonsils back here, what happens is those muscles relax and they block the airway.
I’ll post the graphic so that way you guys can see exactly what’s going on.
Speaker 1: (01:08)
Um, during, I would say during allergy season is when a lot of us suffer with it. Right now I feel myself a victim of snoring. Um, I can tell you that, um, it is probably the middle of December. It’s not probably, it’s the middle of December and probably this is the worst time for my allergies. Uh, I have, I have some kind of allergy probably with the dust or whatnot, and I can feel now a certain loss of sleep due to having an issue breathing if I lay on my back. So what I’m doing is I’m mentally blocking myself from laying on my back and making sure I sleep on my side the whole night. It’s very hard to do, but if you train yourself to do it, you’re a little bit safer that way.
So back to the subject of snoring, as I just told you, allergies can affect a snoring and cause it to go worse.
Speaker 1: (02:07)
Um, in large tonsils such as when you have a sore throat, unfortunately strep that causes everything to inflame in the back of your throat, causing you to snore.
Uh, alcohol, uh, alcohol can cause you to snore. And what happens there is a relaxing and alcohol and also the inflammation caused by alcohol will cause the muscles in your throat to loosen up way too much and cause you to restrict your airways.
Other things that cause it, um, weight gain if you’ve had sudden weight gain or if you find yourself on the bad end of the scale you, um, w could have or will have a snoring issue. Um, just there’s all kinds of causes, uh, from the weight gain from, from alcohol like that. I do want to tell you that there are ways that you can battle snoring.
Number one is of course, cut down on the night and eat nightly glass of red wine, beer, red wine, same thing.
Speaker 1: (03:13)
So cut down on that. Um, what you’ll find is that the nights that you haven’t drank an alcoholic beverage, uh, the inflammation in your throat has gone down. You’re able to breathe better. It will help you in the long run on many levels. But if you want to cut down on your alcohol consumption, that’s one thing you can do.
Second thing you can do is like I just told you, sleep on your side. When you sleep on your side, it alleviates a little bit of the pressure of the airway being or constricting being constricted because gravity works with you.
Okay. A a way that we have here in the store, and this is a shameless pitch, but I will tell you that getting an adjustable base will totally help you with snoring because it raises your head up a little bit more and it causes the gravity to not pull the muscles in that way that they’re blocking your airway.
Speaker 1: (04:09)
Will it stop snoring? 100% completely? No, but it will quiet it down quite a bit. Okay.
The other thing is weight loss. Do yourself a favor, try to stand and stay on the good side of the scale and the reason being is what we all know, all the health problems that having excess weight can cause, but it also affects your sleep. It will affect your sleep in other ways other than snoring.
But today’s topic is snoring and I will tell you that losing a couple of pounds can alleviate a lot of the snoring stream that you’re facing. Okay, so now I’m going to get to the big part of the subject of snoring, and this is the part that I know a lot of people don’t want to hear and that is snoring could be a, not could be, but snoring is a lot of times an indicator of serious health issues.
Speaker 1: (05:13)
I know a lot of us think snoring is trivial. Oh, you know, I can, I can just do what he said. I can sleep on my side, I’ll get an adjustable base, I’ll be fine. But no, the truth of the matter is is that snoring indicates a lot of times issues such as sleep apnea, sleep apnea is basically the obstructed airway that I’ve already talked about except in a form that actually causes the person’s heart to stop and causes breathing to stop. It’s no joke.
Sleep apnea is pretty serious. Your heart stopping your blood not getting oxygenated is all damaging. The heart muscle damage, the heart muscle, it doesn’t repair itself. So do yourself a favor. If you see or feel that your snoring is more of an issue than what I’ve been talking about here, please go sleep ghostly a doctor. They’ll do a sleep study.
Speaker 1: (06:15)
There’s nothing wrong with having to see CPAP when we do deliveries here at the store. Trust me, I will tell you, your neighbor has a sleep, pap RST, CPAP. Yes. It’s that common. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a CPAP machine, so please get over the fact that, Oh well, I’ll never sleep with it. I’ll never do this. I’ll never do that. No.
Take snoring as this first issue if you’ve tried to deal with it, and if it’s, if it feels like it’s more than just a nuisance, then I want you to please think about going to see a doctor. There’s nothing wrong with seeing the doctor about snoring and sleep issues because it can affect your heart and your longterm health. So this has been sleep coach. I really hope this video has been helpful. I, if you have any questions or comments, please leave them below.
